William Wilberforce (1759-1833) was a Member of Parliament, and as a confidant of the prime minister was at the very center of imperial power. Following his conversion his political career changed course, focusing on ending the trade in slaves abroad and moral reformation at home. Wilberforce helped his generation imagine something which had not existed for thousands of years—a world without slaves.
